ATLAS

IN PROGRESS

ATLAS is engaged in critically reexamining the principles and philosophies behind contemporary world processes in order to maintain the bio heritage of different places, and support traditional craftsmanship and the diversity of cultural traditions around the world.

We believe ethics and philosophy are the primary tools for building the future. We are trying to discover how the relationship between humans and the biosphere will change.

Our key task is to transform the design process and the principles of human interaction with the natural environment. Our expertise focuses on natural and urban areas of various sizes, understanding their present and predicting a sustainable biosphere-oriented future.

The Anthropocene era revision movement has gained momentum in the last few years, reaching the general public through a succession of publications and books such as Peter Singer's Animal Liberation and Practical Ethics (1975), George Monbiot's Feral (2013), Isabella Tree's Wilding (2018) and others. These examples present very different arguments coming from very different personal and professional backgrounds. Differences in theoretical approach suggest both the relatively clear appeal of Rewilding and the often conflicting views of the movement, even among its supporters. In its most basic and simplest form, Rewilding occurs when humans stop interfering with natural processes. Proponents of Rewilding argue that many ecosystems as we know them are depleted, lacking the ability to support the processes that are characteristic of the wild and lacking the ability to support the diversity of plants, fungi, insects, and other often hidden agents of biosystems that could maintain a balance in local and global systems. By relinquishing control, humans are empowered to allow natural processes to resume and landscapes to regain their own balance. What form this will take is debatable - of course, Isabella Tree's redesigned farm model is very different from the model adopted, for example, in the Alladale Preserve. However, the idea of handing control over to nature and reversing some of the damage caused by humans is true in many areas of ecology and modern conservation.

It is necessary to change the way of thinking about nature, to change the traditional linear, anthropocentric constructions that prevail in Western theory, politics, economics and social relations, and this requires creativity.
In order to change relations with the planet from exhaustion to cooperation, it is necessary to give an experience of a possible image of the future for the human population, to give an understanding of the responsibility of everyone in this process, to see the image of both a negative scenario, in the event of continuing the existing course of the anthropocentric model of society, and a positive one, which will significantly improve the quality of everyday life for everyone and guarantee a sustainable future for the planet and human civilization.

TEST PROJECTS

Sites with different initial data in different climatic zones make it possible to build an experimental model and implement a test project by adjusting the customer's technical task in accordance with the principles of biospheric design - environmental permeability. At the same time, the landfill can be a school of biosphere development with open public access,  ncreasing the attractiveness of the territory, attracting the local community and implementing a program of additional education and enlightenment.

PROTOCOL

The protocol sets the standard for global design activities that are as safe as possible for the environment and organisms. The basis of the protocol is the permeability coefficient of solutions, which is calculated relative to the number of processes blocked by one or another intrusion into the environment.

The protocol can be used both to prepare the terms of reference and to check the design for compliance with the requirements of biosystem agents on the territory.

The protocol consists of the maximum possible data to be collected and recorded and describes the model of the territory, taking into account the totality of natural and anthropogenic parameters, biochemistry, flora, fauna, biomechanical and geophysical features, animal, insect, migration routes, formed and planned biological communities.

For professionals, the protocol is a software extension compatible with the most common parametric design programs, printed and digital materials for checking the design against the parameters.

The application uses both data from open sources and “model” data obtained from polygon projects. A constantly growing database updates and expands the protocol data.

EDUCATION

Pop-Up schools for teaching the principles of biospheric development. The school project is an example of the implementation of the biosphere design strategy.

Schools appear in various places: urbanized, de-urbanized, natural and man-made territories. A series of seminars, workshops, installations, open laboratories and lectures implement an educational program adapted to the local needs of the region and the environment.

LUCH

MEDIA STATION

A strategic visionary concept of a socio-cultural and biotechnological model of the future, realized in the format of video art. The project is the maximum expression of the ATLAS philosophy of biospheric development and describes the strategic vision of the model of interaction between civilization and the natural environment. For a wide audience, the project is presented in the form of popular science documentaries and sci-fi films at the LUCH station. The professional community makes up the scientific council of the project and takes part in conferences, seminars, preparation of materials for a wide audience.

ETHICS

LAND USE ETHICS

We support the development of new land management models that are sustainable and productive, create livelihoods, improve the environment, and involve local people in decisions about the places they care about. We engage experts in environmental governance and management and develop new land use models that deliver shared social, economic and environmental benefits. We conduct research, policy, and advocacy to identify what needs to change to ensure that urban, natural, and land management approaches create a positive social and environmental environment for societies. The planning policy should promote sustainable development and help councils, local communities and communities to realize their vision of their area, taking into account cultural and natural features. In fact, some of the most innovative land uses are being blocked by a planning system that does not recognize their value. We want to change this by engaging with planners, community representatives, designers and policy makers.

RIGHTS

PERFORMANCES - RESEARCH

Atlas collaborates with artists, filmmakers, researchers, writers and inventors.

One of the directions of the studio is the study and creation of performative practices that explore social, cultural, scientific and technological phenomena that affect the daily lives of people, animals and the ecosystem as a whole. Through performances and installations of various formats, it is planned to explore and popularize initiatives in the field of anthropology and applied ethics.
